Baseball: Raiders' ace Contento fires no-hitter

Colonie senior Ben Contento struck out eight and walked two while throwing a no-hitter in a 4-0 Suburban Council victory over Bethlehem Tuesday.

Colonie (6-9) also got a two-run home run from Jeff Bink.

A home run short of the cycle, Scotia-Glenville’s Nick Schaub was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and five batted in as the Tartans beat Johnstown, 16-6, in a Foothills Council game.

Scotia (11-3 Foothills, 12-5 overall) got a triple, single and four runs from Luke Mancini. Juliano Febo was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Brett Sarnowski went 3-for-3.

The Sir Bills are 9-5, 10-7.

Queensbury completed its undefeated Foothills campaign with a 5-0 win over Glens Falls. The Spartans are 14-0 in the league and 15-4 overall.

Zack Parsons allowed five hits and no runs to earn the shutout. Eric Daley, Kyle Chambers, Parsons and Joe Marasco each had two hits.

Glens Falls (9-5, 12-5) got two hits from Nolan Murphy.

Schenectady’s Tyler Gannon shut out Bishop Maginn, and Zach Schellenger singled three times in the Patriots’ 13-0 Big 10 win.

Colin Williams singled twice for Bishop Maginn.

Galway’s Taylor Hartman struck out nine Duanesburg batters and rapped out four hits in a 14-4 Western Athletic Conference win.

The Eagles (8-5) scored in each of the six innings they batted. Duanesburg got two hits apiece from Drew Rice and Logan Largeteau.

Lansingburgh swept a double-header against Ichabod Crane, 4-3 and 12-3. Noah Cipperly and Tyler McDonough both had two hits and an RBI in the opener. In the nightcap, starter Brandon Begin helped his own cause at the plate with three hits and three RBI. Jarred Jarosz added two hits, two runs, three stolen bases and an RBI for Lansingburgh (12-2, 13-4).

Ichabod Crane got a two-run home run from Andrew Rose in the first game. Pierce Reilley had two hits and a run in the late game.

In the Cooperstown Classic, Broadalbin-Perth posted 10 runs in the fifth inning en route to a 16-0 non-league win over Warrensburgh.

The Patriots’ Jeremiah Horton and Phil Hemstreet split time on the mound, combining for seven strikeouts and one walk, both allowing two hits. Tyler Schmidt was 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI.

On Monday, Schalmont clinched at least a tie of the Patriot Division championship by sweeping a Colonial Council double-header against Fonda-Fultonville, 9-3 and 17-0.

In the first game, Anthony Yezzo hit a three-run homer, a double and had four RBI for Schalmont (12-1, 16-1). He added an RBI double in the nightcap. Chris Hamilton had two doubles and a single in the opener, followed by two doubles and two RBI in the second game.

The Sabres got a triple, single and two RBI from John Pascarella in the first game. In the second game, Jake Defayette drove in five runs with a double and single, while Kaelan Meers hit a two-run homer.

Greg Musk struck out 11 in the shutout, setting two school records (four shutouts in a season, six in a career).

Fonda (7-6, 10-6) got a two-run single from Zach Shaw in the opener.
