School baseball: Academy shuts out Schalmont

Brooks Knapek and Connor Morgan combined on a five-hitter Tuesday as Albany Academy shut out Schalmont, 2-0, in the Colonial Council.

Knapek gave up four hits and struck out 10 before Morgan got the final two outs as the Cadets handed the Sabres their first loss of the season.

Schalmont’s Matt Capovani also gave up just five hits. Greg Musk and Kevin Paskevich both hit a double for Schalmont.

Zak Shaw threw a two-hitter, giving Fonda-Fultonvillle a 5-1 win over Watervliet in the Colonial.

Shaw struck out 14.

Luke Fane gave up just three hits over six innings as Lansingburgh downed Mechanicville, 7-3. Mechanicville pitcher Nate Popiel fanned 10 in his six innings of work.

Alex Minnick doubled, singled and drove in a pair of runs as Voorheesville blanked Cobleskill-Richmondville, 9-0. The Blackbirds are 5-0 in the Colonial, 7-1 overall.

Brendan Haverty hit four singles, and Seamus Kelley and Andrew VanWoert both had two as LaSalle finished with 16 hits in a 16-1 win over Bishop Maginn in the Big 10.

Drew Fureno had three hits, and Jesse Heroth had three hits and two RBI as Fort Plain beat Mekeel Christian Academy, 18-4, in the Western Athletic Conference.

Winning pitcher John Rooney had two hits and struck out nine in six innings as Hoosic Valley topped Schuylerville, 4-2, in the Wasaren League.

School baseball: Cannon, Travis lift Mohonasen, 2-1

Brian Cannon’s two-run double in the bottom of the first inning was all the support Nelson Travis needed in Mohonasen’s 2-1 Suburban Council win over Bethlehem on Monday. Travis scattered five hits and allowed one unearned run.

Bethlehem’s Tim McGinn was 2-for-4.

Shenendehowa’s Connor Douglas drove in four runs with a homer and a single as the Plainsmen beat Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, 13-3. Brad Pearson doubled twice and singled, driving in a pair of runs, and Justin Yurchak went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI for the Plainsmen.

The Spartans got a pair of RBI from Danny Maynard, who singled and doubled.

Averill Park’s Sam Beaulac singled, doubled and hit a three-run home run in a 7-2 win over Colonie. Ben Contento had two hits for the Garnet Raiders.

Jordan Prehoda cracked a two-run triple with two outs in the top of the 11th inning to lift Saratoga Springs (3-2 Suburban Council, 4-2 overall) to a 3-2 win over Shaker (2-3, 4-3). Jack Herman pitched 10 innings, allowing five hits.

Shaker’s Thomas Kovacs and Joey Kirker both had two hits.

Schenectady rapped out 19 hits in a 17-3 Big 10 victory over Catholic Central. Jordan Bernacet had two singles and two doubles, driving in two runs for the Patriots (5-2). Giuseppe Carberg added three hits and four RBI, while Zach Schellenger had two singles, a triple and two RBI.

Catholic Central (2-5) got a double and two RBI from Adam Dahl.

Christian Brothers Academy topped Bishop Maginn, 17-1, with Chris O’Keefe going 5-for-7 with three doubles and two RBI.

LaSalle’s Austin Bielawa and Phil Proper combined to no-hit Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, 19-0. Bielawa struck out 12 over six innings, and Proper struck out the side in the seventh.

Nick Schaub tripled, singled twice and drove in five runs as Scotia-Glenville upended Hudson Falls, 17-2. Brett Sarnowski was 3-for-4 with five RBI for the Tartans (5-0, 5-1).

Brett Rodriguez drove in four runs with a double and a home run to lead Queensbury to a 15-2 win over Broadalbin-Perth. Zack Parsons also doubled and homered, driving in three runs and scoring three on a 4-for-5 day. On the mound, Parsons struck out 11 and walked none through six innings.

South Glens Falls scored its first league win of the season by topping Gloversville, 4-1. The Bulldogs (1-4, 3-5) got a hit and a run from Zach Ahrens.

Logan Akins hit a home run and a double for Glens Falls (2-2, 3-2), driving in three runs in an 8-6 win over Johnstown.

The Sir Bills (2-2, 3-3) got a pair of singles and two RBI from Richie Lee.

Lansingburgh’s Noah Cipperly hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning, but Schalmont hung on to win, 3-2. The Sabres got a 12-strikeout effort from hurler Greg Musk, who allowed three hits. Dom Toma had an RBI single for Schalmont (3-0, 4-0). Lansingburgh fell to 3-1, 4-3.

Voorheesville’s Kristian Singh helped his own cause with a single, double, two walks and an RBI as the Blackbirds (4-0, 6-1) beat Ichabod Crane, 8-4.

Kevin Napier was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer as Cohoes (2-2, 3-5) topped Fonda-Fultonville, 3-2.

Billy Sawyer was 2-for-5 with a triple for Cobleskill-Richmondville, driving in two runs in a 15-2 win over Mechanicville.

In the Western Athletic Conference, Mekeel Christian Academy’s J.P. Howard struck out eight in a 5-1 win over Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville, and at the plate, smacked an RBI double and an RBI single for the Lions (3-2, 4-4).

Ryan Czarnecki had four hits, four runs and three RBI in Saratoga Central Catholic’s 28-7 win over Mayfield.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo (1-3) picked up its first league win, 6-4, over Duanesburg (1-5, 1-8). Maclin Norray had two hits.

Bernacet helps Patriots turn back Troy

Jordan Bernacet hit a two-run double and went the distance on the mound Thursday to help Schenectady top Troy, 5-3, for its fourth Big 10 win in five games.

Bernacet connected for his double and Zach Schellenger had an RBI single in a four-run fifth inning when the Patriots erased a 2-1 deficit.

Brandon Bush hit a two-run home run for the Flying Horses, and Mike Hughes had a triple and double.

Jason Rose had two hits and two RBI in LaSalle’s 9-0 Big 10 win over Bishop Maginn.

Lorenzo Horvath had a double, single and two RBI as Christian Brothers Academy trimmed Catholic Central, 5-4.

Dan Yankowski had three hits for the Crusaders.

Nick Gavin pitched six shutout innings and scored on a fielder’s choice as Shaker (2-2, 4-2) beat Colonie, 1-0, in the Suburban Council.

Brian Kristal had a double for Colonie (2-2, 3-2), and Kyrek Osterhout had two singles.

Josh Quesada and Garrett Snyder hit RBI singles as Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake beat Guilderland, 2-1. Ben Govel hit an RBI single for the Dutchmen.

Niskayuna (4-0, 4-0) roughed up Mohonasen, 21-2, and beat Bethlehem, 4-1, with two seventh-inning runs.

Tommy Spataro had a double and three singles, and Patrick O’Brien had two doubles and a single in Niskayuna’s 20-hit effort against Mohonasen. Spataro had two hits against Bethlehem.

Jordan Prehoda launched a two-run home run as part of Saratoga Springs’ 8-1 Suburban Council win at Mohonasen.

Jack Herman went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Blue Streaks.

Justin Yurchak had two hits and two RBI to back Bryan Warzek and his nine-strikeout pitching in Shenendehowa’s 6-4 win against Columbia.

Ryan Flansburg and Chris Pontiff combined on a five-hitter, and Pontiff threw out two base stealers before coming on in Queensbury’s 1-0 Foothills Council win over Gloversville.

Flansburg hit an RBI double, and Zack Frazier had a double and single for Gloversville.

Matt Szurek went 4-for-4 with a double, triple and an RBI, and Connor Rodecker went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI in Johnstown’s 10-3 win over South Glens Falls.

Phil Hemstreet spun a two-hitter, and Connor Pingitore had two hits, two RBI and two runs as Broadalbin-Perth beat Hudson Falls, 6-1.

Marty McCollum had two double, two singles and an RBI, and Scotia-Glenville (3-0, 3-1) stayed perfect in the league with a 5-1 win at Glens Falls.

A.J. Wells had three hits for the Indians.

Dylan Klock legged out two triples and joined with Brad Smith and John Vicciarelli on a two-hitter, and Devan Battisti had a triple, single and five stolen bases as Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville beat Mayfield, 9-1, in the Western Athletic Conference.

Eric Orologio scattered three hits for his first varsity win, and Alex Bleichner had two singles and an RBI to lead Fort Plain (2-0) past Herkimer, 4-0, in a non-league game.

The win was the 698th for Hilltoppers’ coach Craig Phillips.

Kristian Singh hit a homer and single and hurled two shutout innings in relief to seal Voorheesville’s 3-2 non-league win over Maple Hill.

Logan Atkins had three hits as Glens Falls beat Ichabod Crane, 5-2.

Sean Dempsey and Ben Del Vecchio both went 2-for-3 with a double in Albany Academy’s 7-1 win over Schenectady.

Justin Jump and Marty Marglasso homered as Cairo-Durham beat Duanesburg, 8-3. Jason St. John homered for the Eagles.
